How Phillips’ Milk Of Magnesia Liquid Traditional works

Phillips’ Milk Of Magnesia Liquid Traditional can treat digestive problems by neutralising stomach acid, and relieving symptoms of acid reflux, like heartburn.

It can also act as a hyperosmotic laxative, which helps to relieve constipation by causing the intestines to hold more water and stimulating bowel movements.

Directions

Always take Phillips’ Milk Of Magnesia Liquid Traditional exactly as directed in the patient information leaflet, or as advised by your doctor or our Health Nest pharmacist.

To relieve indigestion, heartburn and stomach discomfort:

Adults: 2 x 5ml spoonfuls should be taken as required. Do not take more than 12 spoonfuls in 24 hours.

Children aged 3-12 years old: 1 x 5ml spoonful should be taken as required. Do not take more than 5 spoonfuls in 24 hours.

To relieve constipation:

Adults: 6-9 spoonfuls should be taken at bedtime.

Children aged 3-12 years old: 2 x 5ml spoonfuls should be taken at bedtime.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Phillips’ Milk Of Magnesia Liquid Traditional may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. There are no known reported common side effects of this product.

If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

Warnings

Phillips’ Milk Of Magnesia Liquid Traditional may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have acute gastrointestinal conditions.

Talk to your doctor or Health Nest pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have kidney problems.

Using/taking other medicines

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product.

You must tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:

• Medicines to treat bacterial and fungal infections e.g. cefpodoxime, itraconazole, tetracyclines, ketoconazole, and the quinolone group of antibacterials
• Medicines for viral infections
• Fexofenadine (an antihistamine used for allergies)
• Bisphosphonates e.g. alendronate, clodronate, risedronate, ibandronic acid
• Corticosteroids e.g. deflazacort and dexamethasone
• Digoxin – used for heart problems
• Dipyridamole (blood thinner)
• Antiepileptics e.g. gabapentin and phenytoin
• Levothyroxine  (used to treat underactive thyroid)
• Mycophenolate (used to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted organ)
• Iron preparations (used to prevent and treat anaemia)
• Rosuvastatin (used to treat high cholesterol levels)
• Antipsychotics
• Medicines to treat malaria
• Penicillamine
• Ibuprofen
• Cimetidine (used to treat and prevent certain kinds of ulcers)
• Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (used to reduce high levels of potassium in the blood)

Age restrictions

This product is unsuitable for children under 3 years old.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or a Health Nest pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine. 

Storage information

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
