EMLA Cream 5% is an anaesthetic cream used to numb areas of the skin before an injection or a minor procedure.
It is ideal for reducing the pain before a needle, especially for children who are nervous or worried.
EMLA Cream 5% contains the local anaesthetics lidocaine and prilocaine. They work together to numb the surface of the skin, ensuring that you don’t feel any pain.
You might still be able to feel touch and pressure.
Always use EMLA Cream 5% exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Apply the cream to the skin you want to numb but do not rub the cream in. Place the dressing over the cream with the adhesive side down. Remove the backing paper and smooth down the edges of the dressing.
Leave the dressing in place for 60 minutes, removing it before the procedure.
How much cream you use will depend on what it is being used for. Refer to the patient information leaflet for more information on the amount of cream needed.
EMLA Cream 5% may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
EMLA Cream 5% may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before using this product if:
Do not use this cream on broken skin, where there is a skin rash or on eczema.
Do not use it in or near the eyes or inside the nose, ears or mouth. Do not apply it to your anus or the genitals of children.
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before using this product.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging.
