Chlorphenamine Tablets – Allergy Relief

Chlorphenamine Maleate 4mg Tablets are a well-known antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as hay fever, skin allergies, and reactions to food, insect bites, or medicines. This medicine helps to reduce sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itching, and skin rashes by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

What Are Chlorphenamine Tablets Used For?

Chlorphenamine is commonly used to treat:

• Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
• Pet allergies
• Dust mite allergies
• Skin allergies like urticaria (hives), dermatitis, or eczema
• Food allergies
• Reactions to insect bites or stings
• Drug allergies (under medical advice)
• Cold-related sneezing or runny nose

How Do Chlorphenamine Tablets Work?

Chlorphenamine is a first-generation antihistamine, which means it can also cause drowsiness. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, preventing the symptoms of allergic reactions. Unlike some newer antihistamines, chlorphenamine can cross the blood-brain barrier, which is why it may cause drowsiness—making it helpful for allergy symptoms that disturb sleep.

Who Can Use Chlorphenamine Tablets?

These tablets are suitable for adults and children aged 6 years and over.

Do not take Chlorphenamine if:

• You are allergic to chlorphenamine or any of the ingredients in the tablets
• You are taking or have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the past 14 days (used to treat depression)
• You are breastfeeding

Speak to your doctor or Health Nest pharmacist before taking this product if you:

• Have epilepsy
• Have glaucoma
• Have high blood pressure or heart problems
• Have liver or kidney problems
• Have an overactive thyroid
• Are pregnant
• Are elderly, as you may be more susceptible to side effects

How To Take Chlorphenamine 4mg Tablets

Always take as directed by your doctor or pharmacist or follow the guidance in the patient leaflet.

Adults and children over 12 years:
1 tablet every 4–6 hours.
Maximum dose: 6 tablets (24mg) in 24 hours.

Children aged 6–12 years:
Half a tablet every 4–6 hours.
Maximum dose: 3 tablets (12mg) in 24 hours.

Swallow tablets with water. Do not exceed the recommended dose.

Chlorphenamine Side Effects

Like all medicines, chlorphenamine may cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them.

Common Side Effects:

• Drowsiness or sleepiness
• Dry mouth
• Dizziness
• Nausea

Uncommon/Serious Side Effects:

• Difficulty urinating
• Blurred vision
• Headaches
• Confusion (especially in the elderly)
• Allergic reactions, such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing

Stop using and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Warnings and Precautions

• May cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.
• Avoid alcohol while taking chlorphenamine, as it can increase drowsiness.
• Not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk.

Storage Instructions

• Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.
• Keep in original packaging.
• Keep out of sight and reach of children.
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
