Canesten Hydrocortisone (HC) Cream is a dual-action topical treatment for inflamed fungal skin infections. It combines an antifungal and a mild corticosteroid to treat the root cause of infection while relieving symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, and irritation.

This cream is commonly used for conditions such as athlete’s foot, fungal nappy rash, sweat rash (intertrigo), eczema, dermatitis, and irritation in sensitive areas like the groin, under breasts, or around the genital area (vulva or penis).

What Is Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream Used For?

Canesten HC Cream is used to treat fungal infections with associated inflammation, such as:

• Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
• Sweat rash (intertrigo)
• Fungal nappy rash (under medical supervision)
• Thrush-related skin irritation
• Eczema or dermatitis caused or worsened by fungal infection
• Ringworm with associated irritation

How Does Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream Work?

This cream contains two active ingredients:

• Clotrimazole (1%) – an antifungal agent that disrupts the fungal cell membrane, preventing growth and clearing the infection
• Hydrocortisone acetate (1%) – a mild corticosteroid that helps to reduce inflammation, redness, and itching quickly

Together, these ingredients treat both the cause of infection and the discomfort it causes, making this a convenient solution for inflamed fungal skin conditions.

Who Can Use Canesten HC Cream?

This medicine is suitable for:

• Adults
• Babies (under medical advice) for fungal nappy rash

Do not use if you:

• Are allergic to clotrimazole, hydrocortisone, or any other listed ingredients
• Are treating a fungal infection without signs of inflammation
• Have broken skin, acne, cold sores, bacterial skin infections, or perioral dermatitis
• Require treatment over large areas of skin
• Need treatment for longer than 7 days

How to Use Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream

1. Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly
2. Apply a thin layer of cream twice daily (morning and night)
3. Rub in gently until absorbed
4. Wash hands after use
5. Do not cover the area with a bandage or dressing.

Do not use for more than 7 days continuously unless advised by a healthcare professional. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice.

Possible Side Effects of Canesten HC Cream

While most people use this cream without issues, some may experience side effects.

Common Side Effects:

• Redness, itching, or swelling
• Burning or stinging sensation
• Rash or irritation
• Skin peeling or discomfort

Uncommon or Rare Side Effects:

• Blistering
• Skin infections
• Vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea
• Dizziness, tiredness, faintness
