Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream treats fungal skin infections, such as nappy rash, ringworm, athlete’s foot and fungal sweat rash.

It can also be used to relieve irritation of the vulva (external thrush) or the end of the penis, which may be associated with thrush.

How Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream works

Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which is part of a group of medicines called imidazoles.

Clotrimazole is an anti-fungal treatment that fights the fungi and bacteria that cause fungal infections.

Directions

Always use Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.

Apply a thin and even layer of the cream to the affected area 2-3 times a day and massage gently. The duration of the treatment depends on the type of infection.

It usually takes 2-4 weeks for the infection to clear.

If the feet are infected, you must wash and dry them before applying the product.

Skin infection symptoms, such as itching and soreness, should improve within a few days of treatment, although redness and scaling may take longer to disappear.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects after applying the cream may include:

• Itching
• Rashes
• Blisters
• Burning
• Discomfort
• Swelling
• Irritation
• Pins and needles
• Redness or peeling of the skin

If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

Warnings

Canesten 1% Clotrimazole Cream may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or to treat nail and scalp infections.

This product may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms. If you are using this cream on the vulva or penis, you should use alternative contraceptive precautions for at least 5 days after using this product.

This product is flammable. Keep it away from open flames and other ignition sources. If fabric comes into contact with this product, it is a serious fire hazard.

Using/taking other medicines

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before using this product.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before using any new medicine. 

Storage information

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
