To ensure medicines supplied by HealthNest Pharmacy as part of NHS Essential Services are delivered safely, securely, and in a manner that protects patient confidentiality and maintains medicine integrity.
Scope
This policy applies to all medicines supplied by HealthNest Pharmacy against valid NHS prescriptions and delivered to patients within the United Kingdom.
Authorisation Prior to Dispatch
All medicines must:
Be clinically and legally checked by a pharmacist
Be assembled, labelled, and accuracy checked
Be authorised for supply by the Responsible Pharmacist
No medicine is dispatched without pharmacist authorisation.
Delivery Methods
HealthNest Pharmacy uses:
Local delivery drivers for nearby patients
Royal Mail services for national delivery
Couriers are selected based on reliability, security, and ability to meet medicines delivery requirements.
Packaging & Confidentiality
All medicines are packed in tamper-evident, unmarked packaging
No medicine names or clinical details appear on outer packaging
Patient address details are checked before dispatch
Cold Chain Medicines
Where medicines require refrigeration:
Validated insulated packaging is used
Cool packs are included where required
Dispatch and temperature control records are maintained
Any temperature excursions are escalated to the Responsible Pharmacist.
Failed or Returned Deliveries
If delivery is unsuccessful:
The parcel is returned to the pharmacy where possible
The Responsible Pharmacist assesses medicine integrity
Medicines deemed unsuitable are quarantined and destroyed
The patient is contacted to arrange an alternative delivery method where appropriate. Returned medicines are not reused.
Lost or Delayed Deliveries
Suspected lost or delayed deliveries are:
Investigated with the courier
Recorded as an incident or near miss
Reviewed by the Responsible Pharmacist
Appropriate action is taken in line with patient safety and NHS service requirements.
Monitoring & Audit
Delivery processes are periodically reviewed as part of governance and audit activities.
